Artisan Wool

Wool that is determined fit for Artisan Wool under goes a “suint process” We choose to suint, and not to scour or clean our wool with human-made detergents to support the integrity of natural processes and our environment.

The “suint process” is a method for cleaning raw wool by soaking it in water to allow natural fermentation, which breaks down dirt and lanolin without harsh chemicals. The process involves soaking fleece in a container of water outdoors, allowing bacteria to ferment the suint and lanolin over several days to weeks, then rinsing the wool and often reusing the smelly, but potent, fermented water as a natural fertilizer. The method is eco-friendly and labor-saving.

Cleaned wool is then, combed or flicked before being drum- carded into batts, left as full locks for other artistic applications.

Batts are then suitable for the spinning or felting activities of artists.

We are a small scale operation. Custom suiting and carding is a seasonal activity, achievable during the summer months (June-September).
